Austin Farmer’s Markets
You’ll find all kinds of fresh foods at the Austin Farmer’s Markets. They have four different locations around Austin for your convenience. A project of the Sustainable Food Center (SFC), the Austin Farmer’s Markets offers opportunities for all of us to make more healthy food choices.
The SFC also offers organic food gardening, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education for both adults and children to increase awareness of locally grown foods and how to incorporate them into the daily diet.
At this time the Sustainable Food Center of Austin, a Texas based 501(c)(3) non-profit, hosts four of the largest farmer’s markets in Texas:
On Saturdays you can visit the Downtown Market (9am – 1pm) at Republic Square Park – This market features dozens of farmers, a cafe, live music and lots of room for a picnic. The Artisan Market adjacent to the food market offers jewelry, ceramics, bags, body products, clothing, paintings and more.
Also on Saturdays (9am – 1pm) visit the Sunset Valley Market at the Toney Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road – Located in South Austin, this market offers the Imagination Playground, musicians, food benefit programs and Double Dollar, besides the really good food.
On Tuesdays come to the East Market (3pm – 7pm) located at MLK and Miriam Avenue – At this small community market you will find some quick food and drinks to pick up and they also host educational and entertaining workshops regularly.
Wednesday offering is at the Triangle Market (3pm – 7pm) located at 46th and Lamar – Besides the great fresh food, this market features a bandstand with weekly musicians to enjoy.
The SFC offers these ways to enjoy their Austin Farmer’s Markets:
“Bring small bills to the market, like $1’s and $5’s, so that the farmers or other vendors don’t have to make change. There is also an ATM machine on site, so that you can use your bank card to get cash (but only in $20s).
Wear comfortable shoes, and a hat or sunscreen in the summer. Though the SFC Markets have shaded areas, the sun can be hot.
Bring a refillable bottle, and use our re-fill station at the sky blue Information Booth to get some filtered water.
Bring an ice chest if you think you might have a few stops after the market before you get home and keep your frozen items frozen and things like milk and eggs cold.
Go early or go late. Markets tend to be less crowded right when they open or just before they close (there are many, many exceptions to this, so try going to one or our markets at different times to figure out the best time for you).”
