Austin Neighborhoods – Downtown

Published on January 30th, 2013

Austin Neighborhoods – Downtown. If it’s urban living you’re looking for Downtown Austin does not disappoint. With a full complement of entertainment around including Sixth Street, the Warehouse District and Red River – there’s plenty to keep you going until well into the morning. And the best part is the entertainment areas are far enough away from most apartments and lofts so as not to disturb when you don’t want to join in the fun.

There’s also a sophisticated vibe in the Downtown area, with art galleries and shops. At lunchtime you’ll find brown baggers on the capital grounds and you can catch some classical music at the plaza. On the weekends there are festivals and art shows. On Saturday mornings from 9am to 1pm there’s a farmer’s market at Republic Square, open year round rain or shine.

Within the boundaries of Downtown Austin you’ll find dry cleaners, drug stores, and gas stations, but there are no departments stores or large discount chain stores in this area. It is populated mostly with small boutiques selling clothes, home furnishings and artwork. Including a large import store Tesoro’s and the Whit Hanks Antique Shop.

Beautiful Town Lake offers downtown residents boating, walking and bike trails. There’s an economical downtown gym at the YMCA on Chevez Street. This area is pedestrian friendly, with bicycle racks on major streets and a free bus system that serves the area. For safety there’s a group of volunteers on bicycles called the Austin Downtown Rangers. They patrol Monday through Saturday from 6:30am to 10pm. The three entertainment districts are patrolled by Austin police, on foot, bicycles and on horseback. They do advise you to take caution walking though downtown alleyways late at night.

There’s no shortage of neighborhood bars and restaurants to enjoy, or you can get your favorite coffee and baked goods from local cafes. For groceries there’s Whole Foods with a cafe and take out.

Sounds fun doesn’t it? Before you decide where to live be sure to check out Downtown Austin.
