Bastrop – Austin Neighborhoods

Published on February 19th, 2013

No listing of Austin neighborhoods would be complete without the addition of Bastrop. The city of Bastrop is the county seat of Bastrop county and 30 miles south east of Austin. Located on the banks of the Colorado river, Bastrop has all the charm and grace you would expect from a city established in 1837. You’ll find over 100 historic homes in it’s historic district and a wonderful mix of shops and restaurants downtown.

Bastrop was established in 1837 and is thought to have been named for The Baron de Bastrop by his friend Stephen F. Austin. The Baron attempted and failed to colonize the area in 1823. Farming and timber were the mainstays for the local economy from 1836 to 1860. Fire destroyed most of the downtown buildings in 1862 and in 1869 flood waters rose as high as 46 feet.

Today Bastrop has plenty of outdoor activities, with over 75 parks within the city limits. Enjoy the various playgrounds, walking trails, tennis courts, volleyball and basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, picnic areas, river walk and fishing docks.

In September 2011 Bastrop State Park and the surrounding pine forest were 96% affected by wildfire. Firefighters were able to save the historic cabins constructed in the 1930’s. Most of the trails, campsites and facilities have reopened.

There are lots of things to do in the Bastrop State Park, such as biking, scenic drives, fishing, camping, picnicing, swimming, golfing, hiking, canoeing and Golf. The beautiful 18 hole Lost Pines Golf Club is playable year round.
