Hairy Man Festival – Fall Events Austin 2013
Here’s an unusual event in the Austin area, the Hairy Man Festival in Round Rock. Come out, bring the family, have fun and help the community too!
The 19th annual Hairy Man Festival includes a full day of live music, arts and crafts, children’s activities and special performances. Also, there will be a Hairiest Man Contest usually featuring a cash prize.
And don’t forget the food offered by area non-profit organizations:
Cub Scout Pack 174 – funnel Cakes
McNeil FFA Booster Club – hot dogs, hamburgers and cheeseburgers
Girl Scout Troop 292 – pizza and candy
Quilts for Kids – BBQ sandwiches, pickles and baked goods
Boy Scout Troop 161 – nachos and sausage wraps
Gator Girls – Gateway Charter School – frito chili pies and cookies
You’ll be able to get bottled water and soda from most of the food booths.
The money they take in will benefit several charities and ultimately many in need children of Williamson County. Each year they have raised over $30,000 and the community has a lot of fun participating!
So, come on out, bring the kiddos and stay the day, it’s being held on Saturday, September 28th from 11am to 6pm. Can’t promise, but many days this time of year are cool and wonderful.

The Legend of the Hairy Man by Gwen King, Local Historian
“Children whisper tales of a strange hermit, the Hairy Man, who haunts the winding road along the Brushy Creek. Many legends persist about the Hairy Man. Some believe he was an infant accidentally left behind by settlers heading west in the 1800s.
Raised by wild animals in the fern bluffs, the Hairy Man viewed the creek as his own. He resented the intrusion of strangers into his territory and would jump out of the trees to frighten people away. Or, hanging from the leafy canopy above the road, he would drag his feet across the top of passing carriages. On one occasion, the Hairy Man attacked a horse-drawn wagon, spooking the horses. The old hermit was supposedly run over by the wagon and killed, and now his spirit lingers along the creek and road. On a silent, moonlit night, perhaps you will see his eerie silhouette on the bluffs along Brushy Creek.”
