Ideas For Storing Your Stuff

Published on April 4th, 2014

It happens, at some time along out journey most of us will need to temporarily rent storage space to keep our belongings.  You can save space and keep your items safe with these ideas for storing your stuff.

  • It’s important to have the right materials when you are packing so that your things will stay safe and dry during their stay in storage. You will need to get boxes, packing paper and blankets.
  • Be sure to put heavier furniture items toward the back of your space and lighter items and boxes toward the front. This will make it easier to find things and keep things more organized.
  • When packing your items don’t make any boxes too heavy. If you can get see-through plastic containers, these will hold up longer, stack better and make it much easier to find things you need.
  • If you are storing dishes pay special attention to the way you pack them. Most items will keep well in storage with no issues if you will take a little extra time to wrap each item separately with clean packing paper and bubble wrap for heavier and extra delicate items. And be sure to stack the more fragile items on top.
  • Take your furniture apart. They will take-up much less room this way. Be sure to break down bed frames and dining tables and wrap the pieces in blankets so they don’t get scratches. Put screws and nuts in plastic bags and tape to the items they go with so you can easily assemble your items when you are ready to use them again.
  • Use mattress bags or covers to protect your mattresses. This will keep the dirt off while moving and during storage. When you are ready to use them again your mattresses will be clean and fresh.
  • Label every box with it’s content on the top and sides and fill each box to the top so it won’t crush when you stack it.
  • There is space in cabinets and dressers to place smaller items such as pillows or fragile items. This will not only keep things safe but will be a good use of your space.
  • To store a refrigerator be sure to clean it well and leave the door open slightly to prevent mold from growing inside. You may need to prop the door open.
  • Couches can be placed on their ends. And many chairs can be stacked either on one another or seat to seat with one chair upside down on another to take up less space.
  • Mirrors and art pieces can be packed in special moving boxes or wrapped individually in cardboard or blankets for safe keeping.
