- A 5th century Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland, Saint Patrick was known as the Apostle of Ireland and remains the primary patron saint to this day.
- The story goes that at 16 he was captured and taken as a slave to Ireland. He escaped 6 years later and returned home to his family. He came back to the island as part of the clergy and served as an ordained bishop.
- The date we celebrate as a religious and cultural holiday, March 17th, is the date of his death. Today in Ireland the holiday is observed as a solemnity; and a holy day, it is also a celebration of Ireland itself.
- Folklore tells us that Saint Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the Christian holy trinity; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- Another common myth is that Saint Patrick banished snakes from Ireland. There are no snakes on the island, but there never were any.
- Chicago began dying a portion of the Chicago River green in 1962 as a show of solidarity.
- On Saint Patrick’s Day more than 13 million pints of Guinness, the famous Irish stout beer, are consumed around the world.
