5 Simple Ways To Slash Your Moving Costs

Slash Moving Costs

Moving can place a major financial burden on families. According to the American Moving & Storage Association, the average cost of a move within the state is $1,170, while the average cost of moving across state lines is $5,630. Of course, these are just “average” figures, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that you will pay the same when moving. If you’re looking to relocate on a budget, check out some of the following ways to slash your moving costs.

#1) Move In The Middle of The Month

How can this save you money? Moving companies are in high demand during the beginning and end of the month, since this is when most people get paid. Scheduling your move for the middle of the month, however, will often yield lower prices. Call around to request quotes from several different moving companies before making your decision.

#2) Write It Off on Your Taxes

Families are often surprised to learn that their moving-related expenses are tax-deductible. If you are moving for a job, and the move is 50 miles or farther from your old home, you may be able to write it off on your taxes. This includes things like boxes, bubble wrap, tape, utility transfer fees, hiring a moving company, etc. Check the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) official website fore more information.

#3) Make Fewer Trips

By making fewer tips to and from your new home, you’ll cut down on fuel costs. If you’re moving yourself, rent a larger truck that’s capable of hauling your belongings in just one or two loads. You’ll have to pay more upfront for a larger moving truck, but the savings it offers in fuel costs makes it a smart investment.

#4) Get Free Boxes

We talk about this in a previous blog post about buying boxes and packing supplies, but there are several different ways to acquire free boxes and other packing materials, such as checking local grocery stores, furniture stores, liquor/wine stores, and asking friends and family members. So before you spend $1-$2 bucks for each new box at the packing supplies store, try some of these avenues first.

#5) Choose a Reputable Moving Company

Hiring a professional moving company can save you time, energy and money. However, the key thing to remember is that you need to choose a reputable company, because there are some movers out there who aim to take advantage of clients by charging them hidden fees and expenses. Do your homework beforehand and choose a company with a positive reputation.
