Martin Luther King March and Festival 2014
Every year in January Austin celebrates the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. The 2014 event line up includes a Community March, Community Festival with all types of vendors and local music, a Food Drive supporting the capital area food bank, the MLK Oratory Competition, the MLK Youth Scholarship Awards Program and a Day of Service organized by the United Way for Greater Austin and Hands on Central Texas.
The Annual Community March – Monday January 20th
The March will begin at the MLK Statue on the University of Texas Campus. There will be a short program starting at 9am. The March is a celebration of Dr. Kings legacy and serves to uplift diversity and multiculturalism in our city. Marchers will proceed to the south steps of the State Capitol for a short program and then will march to the Huston-Tillotson University for the MLK Community Festival.
MLK Community Festival – Monday January 20th
The Festival begins when marchers arrive and will end at 3pm. There will be all types of vendors and local musicians to enjoy during the day of celebration.
Support for the Capital Area Food Bank
Those attending the march and the festival are asked to donate food in the form of canned good and non-perishables. The donations will go directly to the Capital Area Food Bank. There will be receptacles along the march and also at the festival.
The organizers have put together a list of guidelines to follow when considering what to donate…
“Healthy, non-perishable foods
Items with intact, un-opened, consumer or commercial packaging
Items with non-breakable packaging (no glass, please)
Food within the expiration date on the packaging
Food from your community or backyard garden
Canned meats like tuna, stew, and chili (pop-tops preferred)
Canned Vegetables
Pasta and pasta sauce
Beans
Healthy cereals
Peanut butter”
MLK Oratory Competition – Tuesday January 14th
This years Oratory Competition will be held at the George Washington Carver Museum’s Boyd Vance Theatre from 6pm to 8pm. There you will be inspired as each finalist will offer a personally written 5 minute speech based on the theme, “As a student of Dr. King’s life, what message of hope do you think he would have for the world today?”.
MLK Youth Scholarship Awards – Saturday January 18th
The MLK Youth Scholarship Awards Program will be from 3pm to 5pm at the Austin Community College, 3401 Webberville Road, Building 8000, Multipurpose Room.
Day of Service – Saturday January 18th
The United Way for Greater Austin and Hands on Central Texas invite you to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service. For 2014 the projects will include helping local churches, parks and community centers and boulevard clean-up.
“In January of 2013, more than 420 volunteers came together to complete over 20 community improvement projects throughout Austin. We hope you’ll join us in 2014 to participate in service in honor of Dr. King. Please join us and bring friends, family and co-workers. We can change the course of Austin’s future, and it starts with service.
The MLK Holiday is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and tribute, but above all, a day of service supporting your community. It is a day of volunteering to feed the hungry, beautifying parks, and much more.”
