5 Surprising Ways To Save Money Moving
According to a study conducted by Worldwide ERC, the average cost of relocating to a new home within the U.S. is approximately $12,230 (2010). Following these few tips below will help you save money moving.
#1) Write It Off On Taxes
Uncle Sam offers tax-deductible write-offs for moving-related expenses, including the cost of hiring a professional moving company, boxes and packing supplies, storage (30 days maximum), disconnecting/connecting utilities, and more. In order to qualify for these tax write-offs, however, your move must be job-related, and the commute from your previous job to your old home must be a minimum of 50 miles.
#2) Get Free Boxes and Packing Supplies
Did you know that liquor stores, supermarkets and furniture stores frequently give away boxes and other packing supplies? Rather than paying $1-$2 bucks for each new box, you should check out some of these places around your city. It only takes a couple of minutes to ask the owner if he or she has any extra boxes, and the worst that can happen is they’ll say no.

#3) Move During The Middle of The Month
Here’s a secret that not many people know: moving during the middle of the month can save you money due to the fact that leases typically end around the beginning or end of the month.
Professional moving companies are often busier during the first and last weeks of the month, so they naturally charge more during this time. If possible, consider moving during the middle of the month to cut down on the cost of professional movers and other related expenses.
#4) Make Fewer Trips
The more trips you make between your old and new home, the more money you’ll spend. Fewer trips means less labor and less gas, two budget-draining elements of every move.
So, how can you reduce the number of trips during your move? If you’re moving everything yourself, consider renting a larger truck. Most truck rental companies charge more for larger trucks, but the additional cost if worth it if you can make fewer trips.
#5) Get Quotes From Multiple Utility Companies
Call around and get quotes from several different utility companies that provide service to your new area. Most people rarely (if ever) check the prices of other utility companies, paying their monthly bills without question. However, doing some price comparison work can save you hundreds of dollars per year.
