But don’t let its thin body fool you into thinking it’s any easier to move. If you’re planning to move – either in the near future or further down the road – you should use caution to ensure your flat-screen television makes it safely to the desired destination without damage.
Don’t Lay Your Flat-Screen Television On Its Side
The golden rule to follow when moving a flat-screen television is to keep it upright at all times. Laying it down on its side will place excessive pressure on the glass panel, which could result in it cracking or breaking.
The thin panel of glass used on flat-screen televisions isn’t designed to support the weight of the actual unit, so make sure it’s upright when you move it. Most manufacturers also advise against tilting a flat-screen television more than 15 degrees.
Pull Out The Original Packaging
The easiest (and safest) way to move a flat-screen television is by placing it back in its original packaging. The exact packaging varies depending on the manufacturer’s preference, but most models are packaged in a foam sleeve that’s fitted over the television, followed by larger foam blocks or anchors, and then everything is stuffed inside the box.
This simple setup offers a high level of protection during transit, minimizing the risk of damage.
What If I Don’t Have The Original Packaging?
If you didn’t keep the original packaging for your television, there are a couple of different options available when preparing it for a move. One option is to wrap it in several layers of thick bubble wrap, place it inside a similar-sized box, and fill the empty space with packing paper to prevent it from moving around. Make sure you tape the box several times so it doesn’t fall through.
Another idea is to transport your flat-screen television to your new home without the use of any boxes or special packing supplies. Rather than placing it in the back of the moving van with the rest of your belongings, perhaps you can personally transport it in your own car or vehicle.
