Cool Things To Do In Austin – The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum

Published on July 11th, 2012

The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in downtown Austin, Texas, tells the “Story of Texas” with three floors of interactive exhibits.

Three floors of exhibits — three themes as big as Texas history: Land, Identity and Opportunity. The exhibits at The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum will surround you with the sights, sounds and (sometimes) smells of Texas history. Each floor of exhibits highlights important chapters in The Story of Texas through objects, media programs, and recreated environments. Founded as a non-collecting institution, the Museum exhibits bring the Story of Texas to life through an ongoing process of changing historical objects as loans are returned and new ones are received.

Star Of Destiny
The Spirit Theater’s feature presentation, The Star of Destiny, takes audiences on an epic journey through the history of Texas. Produced by BRC Imagination Arts and narrated by the character of Sam Houston, The Star of Destiny focuses on Texas stories of perseverance. Historic events such as the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 come to life with sets, special lighting, and amazing sound effects. Seats shake as visitors witness a gusher exploding from an East Texas oil derrick and the takeoff of Saturn V as seen from Mission Control at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in Houston. Other surprising effects, such as wind and smoke, help make The Star of Destiny a memorable learning experience for all ages.

The Texas Spirit Theater
The Texas Spirit Theater is the biggest multimedia special effects theater of its kind in Texas. Located on the second floor of The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, this 200-seat venue boasts three screens, fixed sets, and several thrilling special effects to create a truly unique experience.

IMAX Theatre
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum features Austin’s only IMAX Theatre. This 400-seat, state-of-the-art theatre uses innovative IMAX technology to create the ultimate film experience. Unlike many IMAX theatres, ours is equipped with an IMAX projector that has both 2-D and 3-D capabilities. The Theatre can also show special films on a movie-quality 35mm projector.

The IMAX Theatre is a fully accessible facility. With its own separate entrance, the Theatre is able to operate independently of the Museum and remains open in the evenings, with extended hours on weekends. The IMAX Theatre Lobby is a distinctive, dramatic space with a carpet pattern that incorporates native Texas flora in the design. Subject to availability and IMAX show schedules.

Texas – The Big Picture
Experience the myth, majesty and magnitude of the Lone Star State on the giant screen. From the Panhandle to the Rio Grande and from West Texas to the Gulf of Mexico, the Texas landscape is as diverse as the folks who live there. Find out how Texas innovation and ingenuity have led the way in exploration, from the depths of the Earth to the far reaches of outer space. This larger-than-life movie puts you in a “Texas state of mind” — daring you to look out at the boundless horizon and dream big.

The Story of Texas Cafe
Admission to the Museum’s Exhibits is not required to enter the Cafe.
The Story of Texas Cafe is located on the Second Floor of the Museum and can be reached via the Rotunda stairs or the IMAX Theatre elevators. The Cafe offers a variety of food choices for tasty, fun lunches and snacks and has indoor and outdoor dining. Complement your visit to the Museum or drop in anytime for a bite.
