Austin Texas – A Great Place To Live
When President of the new Republic of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar, in 1839 sent a group of men to locate a site for the new capitol, here’s what they reported: “The imagination of even the romantic will not be disappointed on viewing the valley of the Colorado, and the fertile and gracefully undulating woodlands and luxuriant prairies at a distance from it.” They were referring to what is now Austin, Texas.
Originally settled in 1837 by Stephen F. Austin, Austin is now the fourth largest city in Texas and the sixteenth largest city in the United States. It’s most likely the beauty of Austin that draws many to this area. Others are drawn by the opportunity for education and the technology. But don’t forget about the music. Austin offers more music venues per capita than any other city in the United States.
Many famous people are and have been citizens of Austin, including actors, US Presidents, athletes, chefs, golfers and musicians.
In 1839, while Austin was still inhabited by Native Americans, many eager people bought lots for $120. Still a wilderness and on the route of the Chisholm Trail, Austin was inhabited by settlers and the Comanche and Waco Indian tribes.
Among those early settlers was famous German sculptor Elisabet Ney, you can see her work at the Texas State Capitol. There you’ll find her statues of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin. Another famous early Austinite was Augustus Scholz. In 1866 his property, an entire city block, came to be known as Scholz Beer Garten in 1866 and could be thought of as one of the first music venue in the city; known for celebration, and singing festivals. Still in the original spot at Sixteenth Street and San Jacinto, Scholtz Beer Garten is the oldest restaurant in Texas.
Perhaps one of the most notable Texas natives, Lyndon Baines Johnson, our 36th President, grew up in the Texas Hill Country. Here are his words of love for Austin and the Texas Hill Country; “There is something different about this country from any other part of the nation. The climate is generally pleasant, the sun is generally bright, the air seems to be always clean, and the water is pure. The moons are a little fuller, the stars are a little brighter.”
