Austin Neighborhoods – Hyde Park
The first thing you’ll notice when you enter Austin’s Hyde Park neighborhood is the beautiful architecture, trees and that most of the homes have front porches… And maybe the most wonderful thing is that you can walk to the local cafe!
“Located in Central Austin, Hyde Park is defined by W. 38 Street to the south, W. 51 Street to the north, Duval Street to the east, and Guadalupe Street to the west. It is situated just north of the The University of Texas and borders the neighborhoods of Hancock and North Loop. [2] Hyde Park traces its origins back to 1891 and is considered to be Austin’s first suburb.[3] The neighborhood was originally developed by Monroe Martin Shipe in 1891 as a “White Only” streetcar suburb with a large artificial lake, but it has since become one of the most densely populated areas in the city’s urban core.” ~Wikipedia
Today at the center of the community are several popular cafes, Mother’s (Vegetarian), Asti (Italian) and the Hyde Park Bar and Grill. Some of the local accommodations include Fresh Plus Grocery Store, a dry cleaners, Hyde Park Gym, and a shopping center featuring an H-E-B grocery store. You’ll also fall in love with the tree shaded streets, B&B’s and other unique businesses.
Every year the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association holds a home tour. There’s also the Elesabet Ney Museum, the former studio and portrait collection created by 19th century sculptor. The museum offers a range of educational programs, exhibits, special events, workshops and lectures throughout the year. And no story of this neighborhood would be complete without mention of the oldest golf course in Texas (built in 1899), Hancock Golf on east 41st street.
Because Hyde Park is so close to the University of Texas campus you’ll find faculty and students. There are many young professionals and families loving the quiet welcoming community.
