After spending thousands of dollars on college tuition, spending more money on a moving company probably isn’t your top priority. But, if you aren’t careful about the mover you choose to help move and possibly store your belongings, you can wind up paying more than you wanted and spending extra to replace damaged goods.
The peak time for college move out is over the next two weeks, make sure you get your request on the moving company’s schedule ASAP.
Before you sign on the dotted line, here are a few tips for the move and some questions to ask your potential moving company:
1.) Ask for their licenses and insurance. Your moving company should be able to show you a US DOT and DMV number, as well as a copy of their insurance policy.
2.) Do your homework and ask for referrals. Ask for client referrals.
3.) Price Check. Call three to four companies for price comparisons. They should all be similar. If you find a deal that’s too go to be true, chances are it is. Make sure you are getting both quality and value for your dollar.
4.) Know exactly what you are getting into. Does your mover charge by the move or by the hour? Is there a minimum number of hours? Do they charge a roll out fee? Is there a separate price for larger pieces such as armories, washer/dryer, sofas, etc. Is there a price break if you pre-assemble furniture or pre-pack boxes?
5.) Storage. Will you need to store your college student’s belongings over the summer? Does your moving company also provide storage? Is it crated? Climate controlled? Can you contract for move out and move in?
