ENERGY STAR® Sales Tax Holiday May 2013! From 12:01am Saturday, May 25th until 11:59pm on Monday, May 27th you can purchase Energy Star qualifying products and not pay sales tax. And the good news is there’s no limit on the number of Energy Star product you can purchase and an exemption certificate is not required.  Also, these tax exemptions can be used on products purchased online, with the use of Layaway service, delivery charges  and product installation, with exclusions. *

To be sure products qualify for the tax free promotion look for the Energy Star logo on the appliance itself or the packaging or the Energy Guide label.

“ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Earning the ENERGY STAR means a product meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set by these two federal agencies.”

The products qualifying for the exemption are
Air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less
Refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less
Ceiling fans
Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
Clothes washers+
Dishwashers
Dehumidifiers
Programmable thermostats++

+ Because most dryers use similar amounts of energy, ENERGY STAR does not label clothes dryers.

++ ENERGY STAR specification of programmable thermostats was suspended on December 31, 2009; however, any existing stock of ENERGY STAR labeled programmable thermostats offered for sale by retailers is still eligible for the exemption.

Internet Sales – You can save tax dollars on internet and catalog sales of Energy Star products when the product is paid for and delivered to the purchaser during the tax free holiday or the purchaser orders and pays for the product and the retailer accepts the order during the tax fee period for immediate shipment, delivery can be made after the exemption period. *

Layaway – You can use the stores layaway plan to save tax dollars. Whether you make the final payment on your layaway order or you place your purchases into layaway during the tax free period your purchases qualify for the exemption. *

Delivery, Shipping, Handling or Transportation Charges – When you purchase a qualifying product and request delivery, if there is a separate delivery charge, the delivery charge is exempt from tax. *

Installation Charges – Charges for installation of qualifying items purchased during the sales tax holiday may or may not qualify for the exemption. Depending on whether the purchased items are attached or installed in real property and whether the property is residential or nonresidential. *
