Gardens On Tour 2013 at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Attention all gardeners and want to be gardeners! Come on out to the Gardens On Tour 2013 at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center! This year’s tour will feature five private gardens and the gardens at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center was established by First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson and actress Helen Hayes to create awareness of our native plants and to teach us how to grow native plants in our own garden designs around our homes. The Gardens on Tours continues that desire with beautiful examples of fine design using wildflowers and native plants.
What a treat to get to tour these exquisite and mature gardens; for the beauty, for the ideas and for the inspiration! And remember, the blooming flowers and shrubs you will see in these gardens are hardy enough to withstand just about anything our Texas weather brings. And best of all native plants are so much easier to grow and care for, not requiring as much water or chemicals.
This years emphasis is on Small Urban Gardens. So put on your hat and your walking shoes and spend a day in the beautiful Austin spring gardens. There will be staff on hand at each garden to answer questions.
“The Wildflower Center is the nation’s leading native plant garden, and again this year we have expanded our gardens to show off stunning Texas plants. Check out the Mollie Steves Zachry Texas Arboretum entrance garden—the arboretum itself opens to the public next week.
Our gardens demonstrate that beauty and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. You might want to look at the Homeowners Inspiration Gardens to see how native plants work in naturalistic, traditional and formal styles, as well as the Texas mixed border garden where Texas natives meet English style. New this year is the Habiturf™ lawn in the traditional garden, which needs less water, less mowing and less weeding.”
