Summer Pool Safety For Children
Summer is here and it’s time for some fun in the sun and swimming in the pool! Here are 8 ideas for summer pool safety for children.
1. No Running – This one may ring in your ears from childhood. It’s still a good idea! Falling while running could injure the runner and/or someone close by. It can take parental control to keep down rough play around the pool.
2. Wear sunscreen – This seems like a no-brainer, but there are still many children unprotected, or under protected poolside. Now they have strong (50spf) lotions or sprays that are very effective. Even when the label says ‘waterproof” you still need to reapply after an hour or so in the water. I don’t need to tell you how bad a sunburn hurts and how bad it is for your skin.
3. Be Prepared – It’s no fun to have to go home because Susie cut her foot on something. Be sure to bring bandaids, antibiotic ointment and hydrogen peroxide to take care of minor issues pool-side.
4. No Lifeguard or Adult Supervision Equals No Swimming – A million things can happen when your children are in the pool. Even if it’s a small pool in your back yard or hotel, don’t let your children swim unattended, ever. There’s a sign to this effect at every pool. Take heed.
5. Give Your Children Your Undivided Attention – It only takes a moment to run to get the phone or grab a snack, but don’t leave your children in the pool while you go. Things can quickly get out of hand around a pool. Older children may not realize that their actions could be dangerous. Stay with your children or have them get out and go with you if it’s that important that you step away.
6. Lightening – Lightening can be very dangerous around water. Even if the lightening is still a ways away, if you can see it, it’s time to get out of the pool. There will be plenty of swim days when the sky is safe. Don’t take chances.
7. Take Charge – Take a moment to see how deep the areas of the pool are and let the younger children know where they should stay. Stay with very young children, even in the shallow area, just one slip and they are underwater. Be there at all times for their safety.
8. Stay Hydrated – Anytime your children are in the sun, they need extra fluids. This is especially important to remember around the pool. Fun play takes lots of energy and when you are in the water you don’t get as hot so you may not realize it’s time for a drink. Call time outs regularly so everyone can get a drink or snack if needed.
By following these simple rules you’ll be much safer and have lots more fun this summer! Happy swimming!
