Just a short drive north west of Austin proper you will find the city of Leander, Texas. Much of this beautiful city overlooks the Texas Hill Country. Located 10 miles due west of Interstate 35 on US 183, Leander offers a variety of lifestyles. The Crystal Falls Golf Club owned and operated by the City of Leander offers an impressive 18-hole course. Found in the picturesque Hill Country, this 6,654 course offers water hazards on 12 holes. History – Originally called Bagdad the little settlement was established on July 17, 1882. The first settlers arrived around 1845, receiving bounty land grants for their service in the Texas Revolution. A major hindrance to the development of the town was continued attacks by Indians who also lived in the area.
During the 1850’s businesses began to open, including a blacksmith shop and a post office. When the railroad came through 1 mile east of town the townspeople began to move their business and homes closer to the railroad tracks.
In 1882 the new town of Leander was born. Named after Leander “Catfish” Brown, one of the men responsible for the completion of the rail line. The post office was moved from Bagdad to Leander, the first bank was established, doctor’s offices and lawyer’s offices opened and a drug store was established. Ranching and farming were increasing. Cotton was the main crop and soon Wesley Craven and J.Sampley built cotton gins.
Leander Today – “Leander, presently, has a population estimated at over 30,000. The Leander Independent School District has grown into the largest school district in Williamson County and the fastest growing district in the state of Texas. It presently has a total of five high schools, eight middle schools and twenty-three elementary schools. It encompasses the cities of Leander, Cedar Park, Jonestown, and parts of Northwest Austin. New businesses are on their way and the residential growth that has been experienced over the past few years is phenomenal. The long-term water supply is now secure for the city’s residents and a newly expanded waste-water treatment plant is on-line. The city continues to expand its roadway network to assist the residents of Leander in traveling into the Austin area.”
