History – Originally called Bagdad the little settlement was established on July 17, 1882. The first settlers arrived around 1845, receiving bounty land grants for their service in the Texas Revolution. A major hindrance to the development of the town was continued attacks by Indians who also lived in the area.

During the 1850’s businesses began to open, including a blacksmith shop and a post office. When the railroad came through 1 mile east of town the townspeople began to move their business and homes closer to the railroad tracks.

In 1882 the new town of Leander was born. Named after Leander “Catfish” Brown, one of the men responsible for the completion of the rail line. The post office was moved from Bagdad to Leander, the first bank was established, doctor’s offices and lawyer’s offices opened and a drug store was established. Ranching and farming were increasing. Cotton was the main crop and soon Wesley Craven and J.Sampley built cotton gins.
