Help Yourself and Your Pets Move With Less Stress

Published on September 24th, 2013

You may be excited about your new home, but your pets may not share your enthusiasm. Here are some steps you can take to help yourself and your pets move with less stress. Remember that many animals are territorial, and they could use your help to adjust when moving. But fear not, almost all of the time pets adjust better than humans do to a move!

1. Talk with your veterinarian: Your veterinarian can assist you with getting any medical records and certificates you may need. Dogs and some other pets are required to have a health certificate. Other useful resources that can inform you about regulations for pets are Departments of Agriculture in each state and Offices of the City Clerk. Also, your vet can offer medicine that will help your animal to make the trip in a more calm state.

2. Update your pet’s identification: Get your pet micro-chipped if you haven’t already done so. Attach an ID tag to his collar. Update all contact information with your new address. This is a good idea for dogs, just in case they get out and don’t know how to get home.

3. Buy a pet carrier: If your pet will accompany you during your move, a pet carrier is an essential investment. Make sure it’s roomy enough for your pet to stand up and turn around. Let him get used to it in advance by using it at your old home. Leave the door open and put his favorite bedding and treats inside.

4. Consider a pet moving specialist: Some companies are experts in moving all kinds of animals. Be sure to check references. Ask your veterinarian for referrals. This idea could be especially useful if you are moving a long way or if you have a very large pet or one with special needs.

5. Find a temporary home: You and your pets may be happier if they get excluded from moving day altogether. Ask a friend or family member to let them stay over until you get settled and can come back to get them.

6. Give animals time to get reoriented: Animals need time to get used to a new environment. Try letting your cat stay in a bathroom for a couple of days until she’s ready to explore. Give your dog his old blanket and ball to make him feel at home.
