Purge While You’re Packing to Move

Published on March 30th, 2012

One of the best things about packing to move is the opportunity to throw out, give away and let go of all that stuff you don’t need. We all have extra stuff, it just seems to be a part of life, but if we use moving as an oppportunity to clear out and throw out, our move will be easier and less stressfull. You can use the one year rule..”if you haven’t used it in a year, you probably won’t miss it.”

Follow this simple system; as you pack, have a box for trash, and a box for stuff you want to give away or sell. As you go through each drawer or closet or shelf, ruthlessly get rid of stuff you no longer use or need or want. Just keep remembering, “there’s no need to move it if I don’t use it”.

Purge, Purge, Purge – When you are packing to move pay special attention to things like kids toys they don’t play with any more, kids clothes they have outgrown, books, old magazines, your clothes you don’t wear or like, medicine and vitamins, dishes, linens and food.

Set aside old paint cans and chemicals until you find a place in your community that takes them. This is also a great time to get rid of any documents, be sure to shred or destroy them.

Get rid of those old and unused laptops and cell phones. Some you can sell on buymytronics.com or Craigslint or eBay. Others you can recycle at Best Buy or at your town’s recycling center.

Moving is about the new place, the new town, the new job, the new school. Letting go of your old and unused stuff…makes room for new stuff, new life and a breath of fresh air at your new home.

Happy Moving!
