Zilker Kite Festival, 2013 – Cool Things To Do In Austin
WoooHooo! It’s almost time for the Zilker Kite Festival, 2013! This years date is March 3rd. The Zilker Kite Festival is the longest continuously running kite festival in the United States. The festival started in 1929 by the Exchange Club of Austin to encourage creativity in children. Today the festival is sponsored by the Exchange Club of Austin and the City of Austin Parks and Recreation.
One of Austin’s best-known events, Austin Kite Festival kicks off a plethora of springtime activities here in Austin. Everyone is welcome, bring your pets, these’s no admission to participate or attend. Come on out and see the awesome site of hundreds of kites in the sky! and the wonderful springtime day at the park.

Zilker Park – The Kite Festival takes place in Zilker Park (2100 Barton Springs Road in Austin, TX 78704) on fields located between Barton Springs Road to the south and Lady Bird Lake to the north. A park road, Lou Neff Road, runs around the border of this area. These fields are now known as the “Great Lawn”. Zilker Park opened in 1936 and the 1937 maps calls this area the ‘Kite Flying Fields’ so there has been a long history of kite flying at Zilker.
