Moving Checklist – What To Do The Week Of Your Move
Comments Off on Moving Checklist – What To Do The Week Of Your Move
One Week Before
It’s almost here, moving day, and there are several things you can do right now.
- Refill prescriptions. Stock up on prescriptions you’ll need during the next couple of weeks. This way you won’t even need to think about making sure you have any medicines you might need and you can concentrate on your move.
- Pack your suitcases. Aim to finish your general packing a few days before your moving date. Then pack suitcases for everyone in the family with enough clothes to wear for a few days. Isn’t this a great idea, everyone will have several days worth of clothes ready to go. This will end most of the digging through boxes when you get there looking for that one thing.
A Few Days Before
- Defrost the freezer. If your refrigerator is moving with you, make sure to empty, clean, and defrost it at least 24 hours before moving day. Hopefully you have planned for this and used up most of the perishable food in your freezer and refrigerator by this time. If you are moving a short distance you can pack up the food in your car on moving day and take it directly to the new fridge, but in most cases the food will need to be thrown out or kept on ice in a chest for a short period of time. When in doubt throw it out, there is no need taking chances here.
- Double-check the details. Reconfirm the moving company’s arrival time and other specifics and make sure you have prepared exact, written directions to your new home for the staff. Include contact information, such as your cell phone number. Contacting your moving company and going over the details keeps down surprises and everybody know this is a good thing on moving day.
- Plan for the payment. If you haven’t already arranged to pay your mover with a credit card, get a money order, cashier’s check, or cash for payment and tip. If the staff has done a good job, 10 to 15 percent of the total fee is a good tip. If your move was especially difficult, you might tip each mover up to $100. Don’t forget that refreshments are always appreciated. Once again, this just makes sense, when the day of the move comes you won’t want to be concerned with this, so make a plan for payment and take care of the details early.
Moving Day!
I know everybody doesn’t share my enthusiasm for moving, but the day is here and now you can relax and let the professionals do their job.
By taking the time to do the things suggested in our moving checklist, you should be ready to go and things should be smooth sailing today. There is one last thing to do.
- Before the movers leave, sign the bill of lading/inventory list and keep a copy.

Downtown Austin Historic Walking Tours – Cool Things To Do In Austin
Comments Off on Downtown Austin Historic Walking Tours – Cool Things To Do In Austin
Would you like to know more about the history of Austin? Here are two free guided-walking tours of downtown Austin that will help you explore.
They start at the south entrance of the Capitol building…
“The best way to discover downtown Austin’s historic treasures is on foot. When you take this historic walking tour, you’ll follow in the footsteps of governors and presidents, cattle barons, and bankers, merchants, and artists, preachers and gamblers, murderers, and prostitutes, and maybe a ghost or two. The ten-block Congress Avenue National Register District is the Main Street of Texas with its wide, impressive route to the Capitol Building. Threads of the past are intricately woven into the fabric of the city’s future as faithfully restored 19th-century buildings coexist with gleaming, 20th-century high-rises.
“The 10-block Congress Avenue and nine-block Sixth Street (Pecan Street) National Register Districts interweave modern skyscrapers with 19th century buildings such as the Old Bakery (1876), Millett Opera House (1878), Driskill Hotel (1886), Walter Tips Building (1876) and Robinson-Rosner Building (1856). Historic structures such as St. Mary’s Cathedral (1874) and St. David’s Church (1854) reflect Old World architecture.”
The Historic Congress Avenue & Sixth Street tour times are 9am Thursday through Saturday and 2pm on Sunday and require a reservation 48 hours in advance.
________________________________________
If you are interested in Victorian-era high society, take a stroll through the Bremond Block Historic District, a collection of homes belonging to members of the John Bremond, Sr. family.
Walking Tours take place at 11 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays and require a 48 hour advance reservation.
________________________________________
If you prefer to take a self guided tour, you can do that too. There is one of historic Hyde Park, one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods, or the Texas State Cemetery, where many Texas heroes are buried. There is even a tour of the West Austin area.
If you’d like to see historic Austin at your own pace or to make a reservation for a guided tour just stop by the Austin Visitor Center to pick up brochures, or you can call 866-GO-AUSTIN.

Moving Checklist – What To Do Two Weeks Before Your Move
Comments Off on Moving Checklist – What To Do Two Weeks Before Your Move
It’s two weeks until moving day, here’s your moving checklist to help you be ready to go.
- First is to continue packing, you’ve packed all the stuff you don’t use very often, but now you need to start packing those items that you use more regularly. Keep in mind it won’t be very long until you’ll be unpacking at your new home. All decorative items and art and wall decor, books, toys, dishes, the entire garage can now be packed. Be sure to mark the boxes on each side and top with the room they go in once they arrive at your new home, and make a general list of contents on top. That way you can find things more easily as you begin to unpack.
- Next you’ll need to make arrangements, if you already haven’t, to be off work on the day you move. This is especially true if you are moving locally. You may even need two days off.
- Tune up, take your car to your mechanic and find out if anything needs to be done for the climate of your new home, if you are moving far.
- “Clean out your safe-deposit box. If you’ll be changing banks, remove the contents of your safe-deposit box and put them in the safe box that you’ll take with you on moving day.” It’s a good idea to keep your important things close to you and in a safe place, you may want to purchase a small fireproof safe to keep your things in until you get to your new home and find a new bank.
- “Reconfirm the arrangements.” Check with your moving company, make sure everything is a go for your move.
Just taking care of a few things at this point can save major stress when moving day comes.

Moving Your Office Smoothly Part 2 of 2
Comments Off on Moving Your Office Smoothly Part 2 of 2
This post is part 2 of a two part blog post, Moving Your Office Smoothly. When it comes time to moving your office these 6 steps are filled with great ideas that can help you create a smooth move for you, your employees and your customers!
4. Packing
Packing will obviously require materials to do so. It is worth buying quality goods for the packing process because progress will be far smoother with an efficient packing tape dispenser in hand than it will with a shortage of boxes and equipment. Labels are essential and a good system needs to be established because everything needs to end up in exactly the right place in the new office.
- Besides packing materials and good labeling be sure to give your employees time to pack and unpack. Thinking through what you’ll need ahead of time will be of great benefit in office moral and the success of your move.
5. Coordination
Coordinating an office move is not like coordinating a home move for the simple reason that there are mass confidentiality issues. If something is normally kept locked away then it is important to keep it locked away during the move. This may not seem like a huge task but strict coordination is important so that you know exactly where everything needs to be and at what time.
It is also very important to maintain usual business practice during the move. Ideally the phones will be in working order throughout the move day. The business that you could lose in the short and long-term if this is not the case could be devastating to your company so it’s essential to maintain normal service on the surface at least. A high level of coordination will be needed to achieve this slick relocation.
- You may want to have a key person at the phones on the day of the move. They will be able to take messages and keep relationships flowing until your office is back to regular business.
6. Celebrate and Tweak
At the end of the move day there should be a party of some kind. An office celebration to congratulate on a job well done and ensure a happy beginning to the new office is an essential part of any move. The next few weeks will require many tweaks and corrections of practices to adjust to the new office so a brief period of relaxation will help to keep the move running smoothly.
As long as you are prepared and take your time with this process it should not only run smoothly, but also be much less stressful than you ever imagined.
- Having a party is a great idea! It welcomes your company into your new office ‘home’. Your staff has gone beyond the call to make sure your company move went well, they deserve a thank you for a job well done.

Moving Your Office Smoothly Part 1 of 2
Comments Off on Moving Your Office Smoothly Part 1 of 2
It’s time to move your office. It’s a giant step in the growth of your company. Your employees are excited at the idea of better space to work. So, how do you do it without so much stress and chaos? These planning and organizing steps will reduce chaos and make moving your office go much more smoothly.
1. Meetings and Updates
Just as you would normally have project progress meetings, you will need to have office relocation meetings. In the run up to the relocation it is important to have regular meetings to make sure that everything is on schedule and moving in the right direction. Glitches in the process will undoubtedly occur but these meetings should raise any snags before they become a real problem.
- Communication is the key here, these meetings will keep everybody feeling ‘in the loop’ and that will create a successful move.
2. Tour of the New Office
Before you move out of your old office it is important that you can get an idea of the new office and how the space will work.
- At least take your key staff to your new office so they can start to see how work will flow. They can also give you their ideas about the space. This creates team work for the move, and we all know the power of synergy.
3. Notifications
It is vital that you begin notifying customers and associates about the move well in advance. All outgoing mail should include a note about the effective change of address for at least a month before you actually move. This is very important because you will almost certainly have a new phone system as well as a new postal address after the move.
- Doing this one thing will dramatically reduce your customers disruption after the move. Keeping your customers in the know creates trust. Don’t leave them hanging trying to figure out what is going on.
Ideas 4, 5 and 6 are in Part 2 of Moving Your Office Smoothly.

Moving Checklist – What to do One Month Before Your Move
Continuing with our moving checklist series, here are 7 things for you to consider doing one month before your move.
1. First up is choose a mover and confirm arrangements. We would love to help you here. You can get a free online quote right now.
2. The next step is to begin packing. When I start packing for a move I start with all the things I don’t use very often. I go from closet to closet, cabinet to cabinet and I take care of all those things that I’m pretty sure we won’t need for a while, like the turkey cooker and my off season clothes and books. Let your moving company know if you have items of special value so that you can get everything insured properly.
3. Clearly label each box, mark the room they will go in at their new home on each side of the box and the top so you can see it easily. Also, you might want to make a general list of what’s inside, right on the top of the box.
4. As you go through your house separate anything of value and pack it separately, this could include furs, jewelry, important files, anything you want to move yourself.
5. Go to the post office or go online and fill out a change of address for each person in your home with a different last name and any businesses you run from your home. Have the mail stop a day or two before you leave so your mail will be at your new address when you arrive. Let a neighbor know when you plan to move and ask them to check your mailbox after you have gone, just in case something slips by. You might event want to give the neighbor a large envelope and a few stamps so they can easily send anything that comes after you leave.
6. “Notify important parties. Alert the following of your move: banks, brokerage firms, your employer’s human resources department, magazine and newspapers you subscribe to, and credit card, insurance, and utility companies.” Let’s face it, you are going to be busy from now until after your move, letting everybody know how to find you will keep down unnecessary head aches later.
7. “Forward medical records. Arrange for medical records to be sent to any new health-care providers or obtain copies of them yourself. Ask for referrals.” If you are moving away from your medical professionals, taking the time to get this part in order will not only insure your care will be free of gaps, but will give you a sense of peace knowing your health is taken care of.
If you will take the time one month before you move to do the things on this moving checklist you will have a much smoother and less stressed move.

Why Use a Professional Moving Company
Comments Off on Why Use a Professional Moving Company
Moving your home is one of life’s most stressful situations. There are many lists of things to do, to close up your life at one home and to open it in another. There are new jobs, new schools, new friends, new and old utilities to contact, cleaning, sorting, packing, carrying, organizing, and then comes time to move everything in your house.
If at all possible using a professional moving company to take care of some or all of the packing, transporting and unpacking takes a tremendous weight off your shoulders. They can do as little or as much as you choose.
Popular Reasons for Using a Professional Moving Company
- Frees up time and mental energy for other important things like preparing for a new job or tying up loose ends.
- When there isn’t a lot of time to plan your move, a moving company can take care of things quickly and efficiently even on short notice.
- A professional moving company reduces the stress and anxiety that usually accompanies moving your home.
- Moving is a lot easier and more convenient with help.
- Professional moving companies offer insurance against items that break during a move. This can serve as reassurance that your prized china or new flat-panel TV will arrive in one piece.
Weigh all of the options of using a professional moving service against moving yourself. You may find that it is more cost- and time-effective, not to mention convenient, to allow the professionals to handle this important job.
