Happy Memorial Day Austin!

We at M&M Super Moving want to wish everybody a Happy and Fun Memorial Day!!!
Here’s a little bit about Memorial Day…
Memorial Day is a United States holiday held on the last Monday of May. It is a day set aside for remembering and honoring men and women who died while serving in the US Armed Forces.
It was formerly called Decoration Day and established on May 30th, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended. Originally observed to decorate the graves of those who died in the Civil War. It is believed the date was chosen because flowers would be blooming everywhere in this country by then.
That same year a large observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River from Washington.
There are many festivities to enjoy today, here are a few to get you started, https://mmmoving.com/memorial-day-events-austin/.

Here’s a short list of a few of the restaurants in the area, Jardin Del Rey, Luigi’s Italian Restaurant, Cafe Blue, Papa Murphy’s Pizza and the Great Wall Restaurant.
History – Originally called Bagdad the little settlement was established on July 17, 1882. The first settlers arrived around 1845, receiving bounty land grants for their service in the Texas Revolution. A major hindrance to the development of the town was continued attacks by Indians who also lived in the area.
During the 1850’s businesses began to open, including a blacksmith shop and a post office. When the railroad came through 1 mile east of town the townspeople began to move their business and homes closer to the railroad tracks.
In 1882 the new town of Leander was born. Named after Leander “Catfish” Brown, one of the men responsible for the completion of the rail line. The post office was moved from Bagdad to Leander, the first bank was established, doctor’s offices and lawyer’s offices opened and a drug store was established. Ranching and farming were increasing. Cotton was the main crop and soon Wesley Craven and J.Sampley built cotton gins.
Leander Today – “Leander, presently, has a population estimated at over 30,000. The Leander Independent School District has grown into the largest school district in Williamson County and the fastest growing district in the state of Texas. It presently has a total of five high schools, eight middle schools and twenty-three elementary schools. It encompasses the cities of Leander, Cedar Park, Jonestown, and parts of Northwest Austin. New businesses are on their way and the residential growth that has been experienced over the past few years is phenomenal. The long-term water supply is now secure for the city’s residents and a newly expanded waste-water treatment plant is on-line. The city continues to expand its roadway network to assist the residents of Leander in traveling into the Austin area.”
So, whether you are looking for a place to raise your family or to just enjoy life, be sure to check out Leander, it has a lot to offer!

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum
Comments Off on The Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum
Are you looking for something different? Something you can enjoy with your children? A museum that isn’t stuffy? Then the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum might just be the place you are looking for.
Found in South Austin, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum, is dedicated to the work of 20th century American sculptor Charles Umlauf. Featuring an outdoor garden, where you can walk around each piece and even touch if you want to. They have waxed the sculptures so those who are blind or visually impaired or those who just want to can touch.
This beautiful, natural oasis shows off the art in a different way with each new season.
Bring your children, the traditional museum rules don’t apply here! For the children they offer a Sculpture Safari Scavenger Hunt, you can learn to make your own sculptures at a workshop, watch artists sketch and enjoy the beautiful views while listening to the birds and waterfall.
About Charles Umlauf – Born of French and German immigrants in 1911, Charles moved to Austin in 1941 to join the new art department at the University of Texas as a life drawing and sculpture instructor. He taught there for 40 years, retiring as professor emeritus in 1981.
“During his career, Umlauf was awarded nearly every professional award, including both a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Ford Foundation Grant. In Texas, he was honored in 1985 by the Houston Art League as “Texas Artist of the Year” and in 1993 by the City of San Antonio as “Alcalde.”
Umlauf’s work can be seen in public collections and museums across the United States, including the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. In Texas, there are more of his sculptures in public placements than work by any other single sculptor.”

Cool Things To Do In Austin – Mount Bonnell
With wonderful views of Lake Austin, the Pennybacker and downtown Austin, it’s easy to see why so many have enjoyed Mount Bonnell. At 785 feet it is the highest point inside the Austin city limits.
Mount Bonnell, found alongside Lake Austin, has been one of Austin’s oldest tourist attractions, dating back to the 1850’s. This beautiful Austin destination was designated a Recorded Texas Historic landmark in 1969.
Mount Bonnell, has a little mystery concerning where it got it’s name. One story is that it is believed to have been named after an early Texas newspaper publisher who moved to Texas in 1836, George W. Bonnell. Another story contends that Albert Sidney Johnston may have named Mount Bonnell after his friend and fellow West Point graduate Joseph Bonnell, who was Captain in the Texas Army during the War for Independence.
There is a romantic legend that Mount Bonnell was once called Antoinette’s Leap. The story goes that after her lover was killed by Native American Indians while trying to defend her, Antoinette leaped to her death to avoid capture.
You won’t find any dangerous Indians when you visit Mount Bonnell, but you will want to keep your children close, your head clear and avoid walking too close to the cliff. And you’ll be glad to know that there’s no charge to visit.
Mount Bonnell covers 5.19 acres, has 4 picnic tables and the long staircase is about .3 miles.
Here’s the official location – 3800 Mt. Bonnell Rd., 78731.
