Pflugerville – Austin Neighborhoods
Comments Off on Pflugerville – Austin Neighborhoods
Pflugerville was named in honor of Henry Pfluger. Arriving from Germany in 1849, Pfluger bought land in the area, first 160 acres and later more. He and his family were farmers and also raised cattle, they drove them to market along the now famous Chisholm Trail. After the rail road arrived in 1904 Otto Pfluger, Henry’s son built the first cotton gin, then another, an ice factory and in 1913 H.H. Pfluger built the Sky Dome Motion Picture Theater.
Today Pflugerville is a thriving and successful community. As noticed by Money Magazine in their 2012 Top 100 Best Places To Live. Pflugerville ranked number 46, comparing Pflugerville’s connectivity, housing, financial state and quality of life to other cities nationwide.
If you enjoy outdoors and water activities you’ll really enjoy the 180 acre Pflugerville Lake. You can’t bring your jet boat, but you can walk or run on the three mile trail, enjoy the beach, kyacking, kite surfing, fishing and swimming.
In 2010 RRE Austin Solar broke ground on the Pflugerville Solar Farm, a 720 acre solar farm which will be the largest in the nation with more than 400,000 solar panels. When completed the solar farm will produce enough power for around 40,000 homes.
Every Tuesday, May through October there’s a farmers market at the Green Red Barn. During the summer, two Fridays each month bring your cooler and enjoy Music in the Park at the gazebo in Pfluger Park.
Yes, Pflugerville has much to offer, a forward thinking city, a rich heritage, their own lake and lots more! If you are thinking of moving, check out Pflugerville, it may be just the place for you…

Austin Neighborhoods – Downtown
Comments Off on Austin Neighborhoods – Downtown
Austin Neighborhoods – Downtown. If it’s urban living you’re looking for Downtown Austin does not disappoint. With a full complement of entertainment around including Sixth Street, the Warehouse District and Red River – there’s plenty to keep you going until well into the morning. And the best part is the entertainment areas are far enough away from most apartments and lofts so as not to disturb when you don’t want to join in the fun.
There’s also a sophisticated vibe in the Downtown area, with art galleries and shops. At lunchtime you’ll find brown baggers on the capital grounds and you can catch some classical music at the plaza. On the weekends there are festivals and art shows. On Saturday mornings from 9am to 1pm there’s a farmer’s market at Republic Square, open year round rain or shine.
Within the boundaries of Downtown Austin you’ll find dry cleaners, drug stores, and gas stations, but there are no departments stores or large discount chain stores in this area. It is populated mostly with small boutiques selling clothes, home furnishings and artwork. Including a large import store Tesoro’s and the Whit Hanks Antique Shop.
Beautiful Town Lake offers downtown residents boating, walking and bike trails. There’s an economical downtown gym at the YMCA on Chevez Street. This area is pedestrian friendly, with bicycle racks on major streets and a free bus system that serves the area. For safety there’s a group of volunteers on bicycles called the Austin Downtown Rangers. They patrol Monday through Saturday from 6:30am to 10pm. The three entertainment districts are patrolled by Austin police, on foot, bicycles and on horseback. They do advise you to take caution walking though downtown alleyways late at night.
There’s no shortage of neighborhood bars and restaurants to enjoy, or you can get your favorite coffee and baked goods from local cafes. For groceries there’s Whole Foods with a cafe and take out.
Sounds fun doesn’t it? Before you decide where to live be sure to check out Downtown Austin.

Austin Energy Regional Science Festival – Cool Things To Do In Austin
Comments Off on Austin Energy Regional Science Festival – Cool Things To Do In Austin
The Austin Energy Regional Science Festival is held in February each year. It is one of Texas’s largest regional science fairs; with 3,000 students from 3rd through 12th grade. The festival is so valuable because it brings students and professionals together, rewards the students scientific research and work and gives scientists, engineers and others an opportunity to share with the community.
“The journey to and through Science Festival is one of self discovery. It teaches children to develop questions into formal, testable, and solvable problems; it helps prepare them to approach life’s challenges systematically. Learning outcomes and finding answers offer powerful self validation.”
Winners of this fair advance to the ExxonMobile Texas Science and Engineering Fair and Best of Fair Senior Division projects advance directly to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
“We need to teach our kids that it’s not just the winner of the Super Bowl who deserves to be celebrated, but the winner of the science fair. We need to teach them that success is not a function of fame or PR, but of hard work and discipline.” ~President Barack Obama
Who Can Participate? The Austin Energy Regional Science Festival serves students from Central Texas whose projects won at their schools’ science fairs. This includes Bastrop, Brazos, Burleson, Caldwell, Comanche, Fayette, Lee, Mills, Travis, Washington, Williamson, and northern Hays counties. Science Festival also serves charter, private and home-schooled students from these counties. Homeschooled students and students from schools with no science fair must submit a Request to Participate.
Register to participate online. All documents MUST BE RECEIVED by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Late entries will be charged Late Fee Rates and accepted only if space is available.

Austin Neighborhoods – Round Rock
Comments Off on Austin Neighborhoods – Round Rock
In the 1990 Round Rock was called a bedroom community, most of it’s residents worked in Austin and lived in Round Rock because housing was less expensive. But all that has changed. Round Rock is now the home of Dell, providing the area with 16,000 jobs. Round Rock has more than twenty major employers now, including Toppan Photomasks, Sears, Ikea, Round Rock Premium Outlets, KoMiCo Technology, Inc., Texas Guaranteed Student Loan Corp., Cintas, Dresser, Hospira, TECO-Westinghouse, Cerilliant Corp., Emerson and Process Management.
A little history…”In 1851, a small community was formed on the banks of Brushy Creek, near a large round and anvil-shaped rock located in the middle of the creek. This round rock marked a convenient low-water crossing for wagons, horses, and cattle. The first postmaster called the community “Brushy,” and the creek was called “Brushy Creek”. But in 1854, at the suggestion of the postmaster, the small settlement was renamed Round Rock in honor of this now famous rock. After the Civil War, Jesse Chisholm began moving cattle from South Texas through Round Rock on the way to Abilene, Kansas. The route he established, which crossed Brushy Creek at the round rock, became known as the Chisholm Trail. Most of the old buildings, including the old Saint Charles Hotel, have been preserved. This historic area is now called “Old Town.”
Round Rock isn’t without its awards, in 2008 Money Magazine named Round Rock the seventh-best American small city in which to live. And in a CNN article, July 2009, Round Rock was listed as the second-fastest growing city in the country.
But don’t be fooled by all this growth, Round Rock is still a charming and small community. With a mix of larger national and small boutique businesses and restaurants. The education opportunities are varied and powerful. Round Rock is the home of Austin Community College, Texas State Campus and Texas A&M Health and Science Center. The Round Rock Independent School district has gained the designation of a Recognized School District and according to the Texas Education Agency the RRISD ranks among the best in the state.
If you love outdoors Round Rock has plenty for you with three outdoor municipal pools, Micki Krebsbach, Rock N’ River Family Aquatic Center, Lake Creek Pool for Summertime fun and the Clay Madsen Recreation Center has an indoor pool open year round. The City lists 29 parks with varies facilities including walking trails, baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, swimming, volleyball, tennis, picnic areas and playgrounds.
Tagged as the Sports Capital of Texas, Round Rock does not disappoint, with the Dell Diamond on the east side of town and the new 75,000 square foot Sports Complex, planned to house multipurpose athletics charted for completion in December 2013.
As you can see, there’s something for everybody in Round Rock! Want to know more? Here you go http://www.roundrocktexas.gov/
