Chesiel John’s Barrel Project – “More than 20 tons of trash are expected to be collected at Clean Sweep. To help us better understand the magnitude of this amount of waste, Chesiel John, an American artist living and working in Austin, Texas, has reclaimed found objects and transformed them into art – The Barrel Project. Raw, sculptural, and composed of items discarded from modern culture, the project celebrates how even the most common objects can be re-purposed and offered as a way to examine and celebrate the joys of life.”

Austin Home Prices Are On The Rise
Comments Off on Austin Home Prices Are On The Rise
According to a press release by the Austin Board of Realtors Austin home prices are on the rise. It seems that low supply and high demand are at work in our area, creating a 11% increase in sale prices this February as compared to the same month last year.
The press release goes on to say that the area is a hot market with sales up 9% from last year and 8% fewer listings than the same time last year! This February the average number of days on the market for a single family home was 55, compared to 71 days for February 2013.
New home starts also hit a six year high in 2013 and more are expected this year. This is important with Austin’s housing inventory decreasing and the rising demand.
Here are some other statistics comparing February 2013 to 2014:
- $230,530 – Median price for single-family homes, 11 percent more than February 2013.
- $293,746 – Average price for single-family homes, 12 percent more than February 2013.
- 2,544 – New single-family home listings on the market, one percent fewer than February 2013.
- 4,724 – Active single-family home listings on the market, eight percent fewer than February 2013.
- $517,286,706 – Total dollar volume of single-family properties sold, 21 percent more than February 2013.

Austin Sucks Infographic
Comments Off on Austin Sucks Infographic
Last week we posted an info-graphic titled Why Everyone Is Moving To Austin. Here’s another one, only this time it was created as a bit of a joke.
Austin is listed in almost every survey as being the best place to move, so this by Kammie Russel is based on humor. The 26 year old explains that while she loves Austin, when she shared the graphic her friends responded by telling her to stop trying to get them to move to here.
It didn’t take long for her to create the Austin Sucks infographic with the negatives of our fair city. These include our lack of public transportation, the hundred degree days and the lack of major league sports as just some of the reasons to move elsewhere. She sites Houston and Dallas as better choices. You can purchase the 2′ x 3′ print on Etsy.
Kammie admits she thinks Austin is an amazing place to live. “I hoped people would like it and respond to it even thought I’m not sure I have a right to complain about other people moving here,” she said. “I thought it was a unique approach on Austin, which I do think is an amazing place to live.”

Blue Hole in Wimberley
Comments Off on Blue Hole in Wimberley
The weather is warming up and swimming season will be here soon! So, gather up the family and head to the Blue Hole in Wimberley Texas. A beautiful swimming hole that is fed by Cypress Creek. You’ll know you have arrived because you’ll be met with large pecan and cypress trees and a beautiful open grassy area. The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center helped the city of Wimberley with the landscaping so this spring should be a wonderful time to visit.
Purchased by the City of Wimberley in 2005, the area has been made into a park with hiking trails, a soccer field and playground. Be sure to bring your blanket and picnic with you because there are plenty of places to spread out in the cool shade.
Cypress Creek is spring fed by Jacob’s Well and there is plenty of room for swimming, about 500 feet. It is all shaded and there’s a shallow spot at the south end for the little ones to play. You can swim in the north end where the water is deep and there are two rope swings. The water is cool, about 75 degrees, just right for a hot Texas summer day. And be sure to bring your float or tube.
“Jacob’s Well is a perennial karstic spring in the Texas Hill Country flowing from the bed of Cypress Creek, located northwest of Wimberley, Texas. The twelve foot diameter mouth of the spring serves as a popular swimming spot for the local land owners whose properties adjoin Cypress Creek. From the opening in the creek bed, Jacob’s Well cave descends vertically for about thirty feet, then continues downward at an angle through a series of silted chambers separated by narrow restrictions, finally reaching a depth of one hundred and twenty feet.” Wikipedia
There is a fee of $8 for adults and $4 for kids ages 4 to 12. It is located at 333 Blue Hole Ln, Wimberley, TX 78676. Driving Directions.
“In 2005, the City of Wimberley embarked on a mission to save the Blue Hole from the threat of residential development. After an unprecedented fundraising effort, the land was purchased by the City for use as a community park. Now, the City is embarking on an effort to design the newly acquired 126-acre park for the enjoyment of residents, visitors, and future generations. It will include much needed recreational facilities for the growing community. The park will balance the needs of the community while preserving and restoring the historic Blue Hole and surrounding ecosystems. The City hired Design Workshop to design the park that was originally envisioned in a master plan led by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in 2006.” More Information about The Blue Hole in Wimberley.

Saint Patrick’s Day
Comments Off on Saint Patrick’s Day
Happy Saint Patrick’s Day Everyone! Here’s some interesting and fun stuff about this awesome holiday!
- A 5th century Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland, Saint Patrick was known as the Apostle of Ireland and remains the primary patron saint to this day.
- The story goes that at 16 he was captured and taken as a slave to Ireland. He escaped 6 years later and returned home to his family. He came back to the island as part of the clergy and served as an ordained bishop.
- The date we celebrate as a religious and cultural holiday, March 17th, is the date of his death. Today in Ireland the holiday is observed as a solemnity; and a holy day, it is also a celebration of Ireland itself.
- Folklore tells us that Saint Patrick used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the Christian holy trinity; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
- Another common myth is that Saint Patrick banished snakes from Ireland. There are no snakes on the island, but there never were any.
- Chicago began dying a portion of the Chicago River green in 1962 as a show of solidarity.
- On Saint Patrick’s Day more than 13 million pints of Guinness, the famous Irish stout beer, are consumed around the world.
