Pecan Street Festival Spring 2013

Published on March 22nd, 2013
Comments Off on Pecan Street Festival Spring 2013

Get your spring best on and come out to the Pecan Street Festival Spring 2013. As the largest arts and crafts festival in central Texas, with over 300,000 attendees per show, this is the one you don’t want to miss!

It’s free to attend and packed with over 275 artisan vendors from all over the world! You’ll find all kinds of artistic offerings such as paintings, woodwork, mixed media, photography, clothing, glass art, stonework, pottery, candles, jewelry, home decor, and lots more.

Don’t let the name fool you, the Pecan Street Festival is actually held on 6th street. It’s not that confusing, 6th street was originally named Pecan street and the festival honors Austin’s history with it’s name.

Of course what would an Austin festival be without music and this one won’t disappoint, there will be over 60 local and national musicians performing throughout the festival. And then there’s the food, over 30 vendors will be on hand, serving up a variety of goodies for your enjoyment!

The Pecan Street Festival is a great place to enjoy with your family, especially for the kids they offer a petting zoo, magicians, rides and a face painting.

Giving Back to the Community – “As their gift to the community, the Old Pecan Street Association selects several local non-profit organizations to benefit from proceeds for each Festival. Over the years, OPSA has partnered with multiple non-profits and city-based beneficiaries alike, including the East Austin Conservancy, Austin Boxer Rescue, Livestrong, HAAM, Austin Community Foundation, Cancer Connection, Habitat for Humanity, Bowie Lax, Austin Inter-Religious Ministries, Knights of Columbus, Austin Fire Department, APD SWAT, Austin Green Network, the University of Texas, H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everywhere), Carver Museum, MACC (Mexican American Cultural Center), Austin Parks and Recreation, Austin Blues Society, the Central Presbyterian Church, the Climate Project, and many more.”

In an attempt to lower the impact on the environment the festival producers have found ways to recycle the waste produced. Look for color coded signs at the trash bins. They use chemical-free portapotties, biodiesel fuel in their generators, and solar stages. They even have a specified “Environmental Section” that highlights vendors dedicated to environmental responsibility.

Some things you can do to help keep the festival green are bring your own shopping bags, use the trash recycling stations properly, ride your bike or the bus.

The Pecan Street Festival Spring 2013 will be held on May 4th and 5th in historic, music filled, and beautiful, downtown Austin, Texas.

Hutto – Austin Neighborhoods

Comments Off on Hutto – Austin Neighborhoods

Are you looking for a quiet, rural feeling town to raise your family?  Where the crime rate is low, there’s a slower paced atmosphere that’s close to all the conveniences of Austin?  Hutto may be for you!   Hutto is located 30 minutes from downtown Austin on the SH 130 corridor.

The town of Hutto was established in 1876 when the International and Great Northern Railroad came through. During construction the railroad purchased 5 acres of land for a station stop, and the town of Hutto was born! The city was named after James E. Hutto, who was also the first postmaster.

The Orange Crush Daylily is the official flower of Hutto. The residents are very proud of their official flower, it represents adaptability, strength and the open arms of the citizens, eager to help each other. That’s quite beautiful!

For outdoor leisure and activities Hutto has several parks to enjoy. The largest is Fritz Park, located north of Hwy 79, offerings playscapes, pavilions, sports fields and walking trails. Bring the family for outdoor parties and picnics!

Hutto is a great place to raise a family, with recognized schools, smaller enrollment, and lots of school spirit, Go Hippos!  If you are looking for some higher education, in 2013, sometime this year, Temple College and Texas State will open a 57 acre campus, until then they are offering some classes at former Hutto ISD facilities.

Hutto the beautiful, from the mayor’s blog…

“Keep Hutto Beautiful (KHB) was formed in 2007 “to promote the positive growth of Hutto through the sustainable beautification of our city.” Keep Hutto Beautiful not only hosts the summer and fall Farmers’ Market located at the old Co op site, but they also sponsor the annual Trash Off and Arbor Day events held each spring in addition to managing Hutto’s community garden located on the north end of East Street. KHB was instrumental in the City receiving the 2010 Governor’s Achievement Award which resulted in the “Hutto” entry sign located on Hwy 79 coming into town.”

An Austin favorite since 1980, Kerbey Lane Cafe really does have something for everybody. We love to go there for breakfast, every week they offer a different pancake special. But, don’t miss out, they also serve lunch and dinner and all 5 of their Austin locations are open 24 hours.

The first store was opened on in a house on Kerbey Lane with an eye on affordable food cooked with fresh local ingredients. It took time to create relationships with local suppliers. Today seasonal menus remain a large part of their offering, with items such as tomato pie and pumpkin pancakes.

Kerbey Lane Cafe offers a wonderful menu with classics like burgers and buttermilk pancakes and internationally-inspired dishes like Greek chicken, migas and enchiladas. What really sets them apart is their vegetarian and vegan dishes. They offer vegan pancakes, vegan breakfast tacos, and seasonally they offer veggie sloppy joes and vegan queso.

Wells Branch is located North of Downtown and South of Round Rock, between Interstate 35 and Mopac. With Wells Branch Parkway running almost right through the middle. It’s mostly a quiet residential area, except for the great shopping and dining opportunities at the Domain, an open air, pedestrian-friendly, shopping center that includes the Westin Hotel. The Domain offers nearly eight million square feet of mixed-use space for living, working, dining and playing.

There is a local library and a park. Katherine Fleischer Park has a community center and gazebo, a large heavily shaded playground, a pool, sports courts and fields. The trails that cross Wells Branch neighborhoods are also part of the park. And they occasionally offer free outdoor events.

This area also offers another pool, Willow Bend Pool, with a six lane, 25 yard pool and a baby pool enclosed by a fence and gate.  Willow Bend Pool is open year round.

The Wells Branch Recreation Center offers an indoor basketball gym, fitness room, recreational game rooms with pool, Foosball, air hockey and table tennis. They also offer fitness classes and meeting rooms.

There are three colleges/universities withing 15 minutes of Wells Branch, Austin Community College, about 9 miles; and The University of Texas at Austin, about 12 miles.

“The District works in a cost effective and efficient way to support the vision by monitoring, tracking, and ensuring quality of life in the District.
